8th Historic Hillsborough Half Marathon and 5K

Sunday 5th October 2025, 7.30am (Half Marathon), 7.40am (5K)

Hillsborough, North Carolina is no ordinary small, southern town. Its scenic beauty and graceful architecture spanning three centuries, provide an incredible location for a road race. Hillsborough continues to host numerous successful races, including the Little River Trail runs, Got GRIT 5K race, and the Camp Chestnut Ridge Trail races.

Hillsborough Running Club is very pleased to present the 8th Annual Historic Hillsborough Half Marathon and 5K races. Both the half marathon and 5K routes have been designed to showcase many of Hillsborough’s historic sites, and scenic routes.

 

Course Highlights

1. Run past many historic sites in Hillsborough: Old Orange County Courthouse, Burwell School, Margaret Lane Cemetery, Occoneechee Indian Village
2. Half Marathon and 5K runners will run one lap of the Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail, the only surviving track from NASCAR's inaugural 1949 season
3. Enjoy running on Churton Street, and on Hillsborough's River Walk, part of the Mountains to Sea trail

 

Merchandise

  • There will be custom medals for all finishers in both the half marathon and 5K

  • T-shirts (male and female cut, and youth sizes) if you registered before the t-shirt deadline

  • Note: for female sizing - you may want to order a size or two larger than you would normally

        Anyone needing to change t-shirt size needs to come to the t-shirt table at the pavilion after the race

 

Packet Pick-up

Packet pick-up dates, times and locations are as follows:

  • Thursday 2nd October Fleet Feet Durham (Southpoint Store), 4.00 - 7.00pm

  • Saturday 4th October, Hillsborough, Farmers Mkt Pavilion (race finish area, 144 E. Margaret Lane), 1.00 - 5.00pm

  • Sunday 5th October, Race morning, 6.00 - 7.00am

Aid Stations

5K: At the Speedway track, pass it twice at mile 1.4 and 2.0 miles

Half: Aid at miles 3.5, 4.8, 6.5, 8.5, 11.0, 12.0

Restroom locations (plenty at the start/finish area)

5K: At the entrance to the Speedway track, miles 1 and 2.

Half: Ben Johnston Road (miles 5.5 and 7.5), Speedway Track (miles 11 and 12)

Slightly off course restrooms at Gold Park too (mile 9)

Post Race Food (runners only)

At the farmers market pavilion right after the finish line

Beer garden (from Eno River Brewing) also at the finish line. No alcohol is to leave the fenced beer garden

T-Shirt Exchanges and Purchase Details

At packet pick up, you will be given the t-shirt size that you ordered. If you would like to change your shirt, you may be able to do so after the race at the t-shirt table under the pavilion near the finish line, if sizes remain

If you did not pre-order a t-shirt, you may be able to purchase on at the Merch table under the pavilion after the race, if t-shirts are still available.

Race Rules

  • The race will go ahead rain or shine

  • For Half Marathon runners, the majority of the race is on public roads. Some are officially closed for the event. However, cars from residences along the course could make their way onto the route. Always face oncoming traffic and obey course volunteers and law enforcement officers.

  • Slower runners or walkers, anyone with a stroller or dog, please start from the back of the start area

  • No running without a registered bib

  • T-shirt changes or t-shirt purchases only after the race at the Merchandise table under the pavilion

Awards

Awards to the overall top three male and female winners, top three male and female masters (40+), and top three males and females in each of the following age groups.

Half Marathon age groups are as follows: 19 & under; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-80; 80+
5K age groups are as follows: 9 and under; 10-12; 13-15; 16-19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-80; 80+

Parking

Recommended parking is in either the parking deck, by Weaver Street Market, or at River Park Elementary School, which is close to the start/finish area.

Larger lots are next to Weaver Street Market, and at River Park Elementary School on St. Mary's Road.

The Half Marathon is paved from the start to around mile 10.5, then it is firm gravel around the Speedway track and back to the finish. The 5K is mostly firm gravel.

From the waiver
All registration fees are non-refundable and you may not defer to another year. Registration transfers are not permitted. Should the event be cancelled as a result of hazardous weather conditions prior to or on race day, registration fees are also non-refundable.
